FAQ

Common questions about pay-monthly.

Pay-monthly is a real subscription — not a financing plan, not a loan, not a leasing arrangement. Here's how it actually works.

What happens after the 12-month minimum?

You can stay on the plan as long as you want, switch tiers, or cancel with 30 days notice. About 94% of clients stay on past month 12 — usually because the bundled hosting, security, and edits work out cheaper than managing those separately.

If you cancel, you can either move the site to your own hosting (we provide a clean export), or we can keep hosting it for you on a maintenance-only retainer.

Why a 12-month minimum?

Because the design and build cost (which is real work — usually $4–$8K of labor) is amortized over the first year of subscription. If we let people cancel after 30 days, we'd lose money on every pay-monthly client and have to charge $5K upfront instead. The minimum is the math that makes the model work for both sides.

Is this financing or a loan?

No. We're not a financing company and there's no interest. It's a subscription — like Netflix or your accounting software. The price is the price; we never increase it during your minimum term, and we don't charge interest because there's no loan to pay interest on.

Do I own the website?

The content is yours from day one — you can copy it, share it, do whatever you want with it. The code becomes yours after the 12-month minimum. Until then, the code is licensed to you for use on the live site only. After month 12 you can take everything to any host you want.

For Custom-tier clients, we can transfer ownership on day one — it's negotiated into the agreement.

Can I switch plans?

Yes — upward, any time. Your minimum term doesn't reset, just your monthly rate. Downgrading is possible after the 12-month minimum, with 30 days notice.

About 1 in 4 clients move up a tier within their first 18 months — usually when they need e-commerce or hit a content output cap.

What's the catch with the included edit hours?

No catch. Hours don't roll over month to month — that's the only limitation. We track them transparently in a shared dashboard so you know exactly what's been used. Most clients use 60–80% of their hours in a typical month; the cap is sized to be generous, not limiting.

If you regularly need more, that's usually the signal to move up a tier.

What if I want to leave early?

You can buy out the remaining minimum at the standard upfront-package rate for your tier (see our packages page). That ends the subscription, transfers ownership of the code to you, and you can host it anywhere. About 1 in 12 clients do this — usually because they got acquired.

Are there setup fees or hidden charges?

No setup fees on Essential, Growth, or Business. No hidden charges, no surprise renewals, no auto-upgrades. The only additional charges would be for clearly out-of-scope work (e.g., a major rebuild, additional integrations, custom development) — and those are quoted upfront in writing.

"
We didn't have $5,000 lying around for a website but we needed something professional. The pay-monthly plan let us launch immediately and treat it like a utility bill. Two years in, the site has paid for itself many times over and we've graduated up to the Business plan as we've grown.
